Banksy is a world-renowned street artist who has single-handedly transformed graffiti culture. The rise of Banksy in the early 2000s signalled an unprecedented acceptance of street art in contemporary art and culture, which has garnered Banksy both global attention and success. Celebrated for his satirical stencilled graffiti, Banksy’s work often provides socio-political commentary on current events. The true identity of the British artist is unknown and his anonymity not only permits him to make bold political statements, but also creates an intriguing air of mystery around the artist. His graffiti incorporates&nbsp;freehand painting, spray painting and a unique stencilling method, which has become his signature style. Rendered in a limited range of striking colours, Banksy’s memorable designs have become a favourite amongst critics and collectors alike.

Lucio Fontana is famous for his slashed and punctured canvases. Throughout all his work—which included paintings, ceramic sculptures, and light-based installations—the artist demonstrated a relentless interest in surface and dimensionality; his material explorations helped blur the boundaries between 2D and 3D disciplines. Fontana helped pioneer the Spatialist movement, which attempted to integrate a fourth dimension into visual art. He studied under his father, an Italian sculptor, before attending Milan’s Accademia di Brera. His work has been exhibited in New York, Milan, Zürich, London, Berlin, and Rome, and belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museo Reina Sofía, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, among others. Fontana’s innovative theories prefigured later developments in environmental art, performance art, and Arte Povera.

<img width="360" height="600" width_o="360" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3b58aa40a8579e3d6505b06c6a105cd1d3931d047ebeda494d5c5557e5357827/BOtero-circo-vendido-.png" data-mid="181138552" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/360/i/3b58aa40a8579e3d6505b06c6a105cd1d3931d047ebeda494d5c5557e5357827/BOtero-circo-vendido-.png" />

Perhaps the most famous contemporary Latin American artist alive, Fernando Botero&nbsp;was born in Medellin in 1932.&nbsp;After a stint at a matador school, Botero decided art was his true calling and in 1948, aged 16, he had his first exhibition.&nbsp;In the early 1950s Botero travelled through Europe,&nbsp;studying art at Madrid's Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, followed by a spell in&nbsp;Paris&nbsp;spent absorbing the works of the Old Masters at the Louvre. He continued to Florence, where he studied the frescoes of the&nbsp;Italian&nbsp;Renaissance, discovering techniques from a bygone era. Today, he lives and works between New York, Paris and Tuscany.

Botero is best known for his distinctive style of smooth inflated shapes with unexpected shifts in scale which reflects the artist's constant search to give volume presence and reality. His oeuvre ranges in subject matter, including daily life in Colombia, art historical references like the Mona Lisa, and abuses of power- all unified his exaggeratedly rotund figures.

He has created monumental sculptures for public spaces in many major cities, including New York (Park Avenue), Paris (Champs-Élysées), Rome and Monte Carlo. His works are found in many important private and public collections, such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.); Ho-am Museum (Seoul); Israel Museum (Jerusalem); Kunsthalle Nuremberg (Nuremberg); Museo d'Arte Moderna del Vaticano (Rome); Museum Moderne Kunst (Vienna); Neue Pinakothek (Munich); Staatgalerie Moderne Kunst (Munich); Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Tel Aviv); The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); The Museum of Modern Art (New York); and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York).

Perhaps the most influential artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso may be best known for pioneering Cubism and fracturing the two-dimensional picture plane in order to convey three-dimensional space. Inspired by African and Iberian art, he also contributed to the rise of Surrealism and Expressionism. Picasso’s sizable oeuvre grew to include over 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, theater sets, and costume designs. He painted his most famous work, Guernica (1937), in response to the Spanish Civil War; the totemic grisaille canvas remains a definitive work of anti-war art. At auction, a number of Picasso’s paintings have sold for more than $100 million. The indefatigable artist has been the subject of exhibitions at the world’s most prestigious institutions, from the Museum of Modern Art and Centre Pompidou to the Stedelijk Museum and Tate Modern.

Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art with his three-dimensional kinetic sculptures, which Marcel Duchamp named “mobiles.” Resonating with tenets of Futurism, Constructivism, and early non-objective painting, Calder’s mobiles consist of boldly colored abstract shapes, which are made from industrial materials and hang in lyrical balance. Calder was an international phenomenon during his lifetime. He won the grand prize for sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale, where he represented the United States. He earned the French Legion of Honor and the American Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other honors. Calder has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and the Museo Reina Sofía. His work regularly sells for eight figures on the secondary market. Though Calder is best known for his mobiles, his diverse practice also encompassed standing sculpture, painting, set and costume design, large-scale public installation, and jewelry-making.

Alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell is one of the great American Abstract Expressionist painters. His expressive canvases and collages resulted from a profound dedication to automatism, a method of spontaneous creation that attempts to express the inner workings of the human psyche. Motherwell’s most famous painting series, “Elegies to the Spanish Republic”—which he worked on for over 40 years—features bold, black shapes against fields of color and patches of white paint. His collages often integrated stamps, letters, musical scores, and boxes of Gauloise cigarettes. Motherwell’s work can be found in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Tate. The artist has been the frequent subject of solo shows across Europe and the United States. At auction, Motherwell’s works have sold for more than $10 million. Respected as a writer and theorist, Motherwell forged close friendships with the European Surrealists and other intellectuals. He served as a vital link between the pre-war avant-garde in Europe and its post-war counterpart in New York.

A pioneer of the 1960s British movement, David Hockney is one of the most celebrated and prolific artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Endlessly versatile, he has produced acrylic paintings, photo collages, full-scale opera set designs, and digital works created on iPads. Hockney first gained recognition for his semi-abstract paintings of gay love. He moved to California in 1964 and captured his new home in sensual, pastel-hued scenes of uninhibited queer men whose idyllic, sunny backdrops feature swimming pools, palm trees, and light, beautiful homes. Hockney has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, among many other institutions. On the secondary market, his work has sold for more than $90 million.
